- How to clean spray paint caps? -
Keeping your spray paint caps clean is critical to achieving smooth, consistent lines and avoiding frustrating clogs. Here's a quick guide to get your caps sparkling:
1. Caps Off
Safety first! Remove the caps from the can before cleaning to prevent accidental sprays.
2. Separate the bad vs the good
Organize the caps that are clogged vs the ones that are not, cleaning them in bulk is the most effective way of doing this.
3. Soak It Up
Put the caps in a solution such as paint thinner or acetone. Soak for a few hours or overnight to facilitate the breakdown of the paint. Be careful not to leave them too long as the solvents will eventually break down the caps themselves
4. Scrub Gently
After soaking, take a soft brush (think toothbrush, not metallic leather!) and gently scrub and remove the caked-up paint off the caps.
5. Rinse and Repeat
Give the cap parts thoroughly under warm water to wash away any leftover solvent or paint bits. Repeat if needed until squeaky clean.
6. Ventilate
Do not put the cap back in the water! Air dry all materials completely before reassembly.
7. Test It Out
Before moving on to your masterpiece, make sure the cap is clean. Does the paint flow well? Is it spraying right? If not, repeat the cleaning.
Be sure to clean your caps during use. This prevents buildup and keeps your sprays flowing freely. After done with a project be sure to turn your can upside down and spray. This pushes all the excess paint outside the cap with air, this ensures the old paint does not dry/clog up the insides of the cap.

- FAQs -
1. Can I reuse caps?
Absolutely Yes! Caps can be reused quite a bit before needing to replace them. Make sure you shake your paint properly before using any new caps. This helps prevent thick pigments that aren't properly mixed from prematurely clogging up your cap. Also, be sure to turn your can upside down and spray for 3 seconds after done using it. Doing this allows for air to travel through the cap without any paint, clearing the insides and ensuring they don't have paint dry in them overnight.
2. Do all caps fit all cans?
No, there are two main types of caps. Female caps and Male caps. Female caps fit onto male cans such as Rustoleum, Krylon, Valspar, and other typical hardware-style paint. Most European paint such as MTN, Montana, Molotow, Flame, Dang, Kobra, Loop, Ironlak, and others are typical female valves so they accept male caps. Be sure to check the description on the product page because there are some caps that aren't compatible with certain brands. For example, the Boston Fat Cap will not work on European paint. The use of an adapter is a good way to allow your favorite male caps to be used on male cans. We offer Uprok adapters, Wingtip, and a few other options at our shop.
3. Do certain caps use more paint than others?
Yes, super fat caps allow for more output of paint at a quicker rate than your standard caps. In return, they will empty your paint much quicker. It is best to use a cap that you are comfortable controlling as fatter caps can waste paint if you're not careful with overlap.
4. What should I do if my spray paint cap is clogged?
If your spray paint cap becomes clogged with dried paint, you can attempt to unclog it by soaking it in paint solvent or acetone and gently scrubbing away the residue. Don't soak it for too long as the solvents will eventually melt and break down the plastics. If the clog persists, consider replacing the cap with a new one to avoid messing up your artwork. Some caps cannot be saved sadly.
